The Simpson Family Endowment was established in 1988 with the purpose of launching the Graduate Program in Physical Education for two years and then initiating the operation of the Sport Medicine Centre by supporting research, teaching and administrative activities. The Simpson family made an initial donation to the University of Calgary of $1,000,000 that was matched by the province of Alberta Capital Matching program. With continued interest on the initial investment, the Simpson Family Endowment is now worth over $5,000,000 in support of the University’s Faculty of Kinesiology. The University’s gymnasium is actually named after the late Jack Simpson.
The endowment has also supported students, graduates and research technicians by financing research/ fellowship programs and the purchase of medical and scientific research equipment. The interest of the endowment has also been instrumental in supporting the basic and applied research activities of the Roger Jackson Centre for Health and Wellness.
CANA also donated $2,000,000 to fund the Faculty of Medicine Simpson Ranch Chair in Beef Health and Wellness.
